What's in a Name: Joel Embiid

May 19, 2018 AT 12:00 AM

Just like they once did on the playgrounds of famed streetball courts, the best players are rewarded with stylish nicknames reflecting their game or their personality. This regular column takes a look at some of the best monikers in the League and how they were earned.

Nickname: ‘The Process’

Player: Joel Embiid (Center, Philadelphia 76ers)

The Story: There are very few self-appointed nicknames in the NBA that stick around, but then there are very few nicknames that are more apt for a player as well. In a nod to the Philadelphia 76ers’ patient approach to talent acquisition and player development, Joel Embiid dubbed himself ‘The Process’ and urged Sixers fans to trust the process in their rebuilding journey.

After taking time out in his lone collegiate season and then again in his first two NBA seasons, the 7-footer did not disappoint from the time he set foot on an NBA court. The entire Philadelphia franchise enjoyed the process finally paying off as Embiid put up a rookie season worthy of NBA All-Rookie First Team honors. Hopes were reignited as fans looked forward to a full season with the Cameroonian center in starring role beside their other young guns.

As the Sixers make a push for the playoffs this season with Embiid shining alongside Ben Simmons and Dario Saric, it is becoming clear that this long route was the best one for the young team. Still only 23 years of age, Embiid has more than made up for lost time this season, putting up career highs in just about every statistical category and clinched the first NBA All-Star starter spot for his team since Allen Iverson. With every passing game, ‘Trust the Process’ is becoming less of a rally cry and more of an example for the other teams in the League to follow.
