So many teams, so little time! How do you pick one to support?
Speak to 100 NBA fans, and you will hear 100 different reasons why they support the teams that they do. This is particularly true outside of North America, where territorial allegiance no longer holds sway. So how should one go about the business of picking their favorite team in the League?
Location: Some cities just elude glitz and glamour. The hustle and bustle of New York may lead to the Knicks or the Brooklyn Nets, while the bright lights of Los Angeles would suggest the Clippers or Lakers.
Playing style: Certain teams have a strong sense of team identity on the court. The team-oriented, passing style of the San Antonio Spurs may attract aspiring team players, while the tough-nosed play of the Memphis Grizzlies stands out to young bruisers everywhere.
Aesthetics: Whether you are looking for the coolest team name, the flashiest jerseys or the most fly team logos, the NBA has you covered. Young fans could be enthralled by the fearsome name and logo of the Minnesota Timberwolves, or perhaps the perpetually-stylish jerseys donned by the Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets.
Favorite player(s): There are a number of fans who choose to follow players rather than teams, especially in the case of an all-time great such as a LeBron James. This can also apply to a youngster with immense talent (Utah’s Donovan Mitchell comes to mind) or a group of young guys with the potential to collectively lift their team to greater heights.
Team history: For those who are into the origins of the game, a team with rich history will always have appeal. The Boston Celtics fit the criteria well in this category, with their countless titles and place as one of the NBA’s original founding teams. Alternatively, you could opt for the modern-day dynasty of the Golden State Warriors.
The underdogs: Who doesn’t love a good underdog story? Some fans may opt for the us-against-the-world mentality of the Toronto Raptors as the sole non-American team in the NBA, while others may go further left field and pick a rank outsider such as the Milwaukee Bucks.
Whichever team you choose to support and whatever reason you may have, keep in mind that NBA fandom is all about fun! So have fun with the process of picking your favorite team and just enjoy the journey.
